INSTALLATION
The work presented within The State of Lower Haight consists of three installations, addressing the street, the space within, and the space between.
The Store Front Installation divides the two-dimensional image of the street into the three-dimensional space it is. Multiple plywood panels with representational graphics of the Block People are presented in a way that creates the illusion of a two-dimensional image when viewed together and a three-dimensional image when viewed apart.
The Photography Installation collects the images of the people, places and textures of all the little things that make up the visual fabric of the Lower Haight neighborhood and collages them within the context of a visual representation of the blocks of the neighborhood. Bold portraits of those that live, work, play and lay on the streets of the neighborhood dominate the collage, allowing it to be viewed in both distance and detail. Small snapshots of the bits and pieces of the current visual condition fill the space within.
The Interactive Mural along the back wall of the gallery space will also feature graphic representations of 'Block People' containing within themselves, photographs or gifts of the neighborhood. Those present at the opening will be requested to cross the space between by giving something of themselves to the neighborhood in order to get something from the neighborhood.
